Check your Canadian passport photo
For online renewal, a commercial photographer must take your photo. Check the file they give you before you upload it. It's free.
The file
Your face
What we check
- JPEG format, 1200 × 1800 to 3000 × 4500 pixels, 3:2 portrait shape, 200 KB to 5 MB.
- Head size: chin to top of head between 45% and 50% of the photo's height.
- Date taken (less than 6 months), and signs that the file was edited or re-saved.
- One face, head straight and facing the camera, eyes open, neutral expression, plain light background.
What we can't check
- Small shadows (we only catch a strong shadow on one side), glare on glasses, natural skin tones: look at the photo yourself.
- Whether a commercial photographer took it. You enter their name, address and the date in the application.
Our face measurements are estimates. Passport Canada alone decides whether a photo is accepted: this tool helps you catch problems, it doesn't guarantee acceptance.
If something fails
Ask your photographer for a new file or a new photo. Don't edit, crop or re-save the file yourself: the rules forbid any change, and edited photos are refused.
Can I take my Canadian passport photo at home?
No. Canada requires a commercial photographer, for printed photos and for online renewal. Entering a photographer's details when no photographer took the photo is false information on a passport application.
