Check your UK passport photo before you upload it
Applying online with a photo taken at home? We check it against the gov.uk rules, for free, and give it back untouched: the passport service crops it itself.
A live guide helps the person holding the phone. Your photo stays on this device.

Our lines are estimates. Drag them onto the chin and the top of the head if they are off; the crop follows.

Ready to upload
Upload this photo exactly as it is. Don’t crop or edit it: the passport service crops it for you.

Fix the points above and take the photo again. You never pay for a photo that fails.
Before you take it
- Someone else takes it, phone at your eye level.
- Plain light-coloured background, no shadows on you or behind you.
- No glasses unless you have to wear them. Plain expression, mouth closed, eyes open, no hair in front of your eyes.
- Include your head, shoulders and upper body. Don’t crop it, and use a photo taken in the last month.
What we check and do
- One face, head straight and facing the camera, eyes open, mouth closed, plain light background, even lighting. Glasses: a warning.
- Framing: head, shoulders and upper body in the photo, not too close.
- The file: JPEG, at least 600 × 750 pixels, 50 KB to 10 MB, and taken in the last month when the file has a date.
- We don’t crop or edit it. gov.uk says: “Do not crop your photo - it will be done for you.”
What we can't check
- Rimless glasses, glare, small shadows (we only catch a strong shadow on one side), hair covering the eyes: look at the photo yourself.
- Whether the photo is less than 6 months old, and whether it looks like you today.
Our measurements are estimates. Only HM Passport Office decides whether a photo is accepted: we help you catch problems, we don't guarantee acceptance.
Can I take it at home?
Yes. gov.uk says you can take one “using your own device during your passport application”, with someone to help you. It also says photos from a booth or shop “are more likely to be approved”, so check yours carefully.
Applying on paper? You need two printed 45 × 35 mm photos “printed to a professional standard”: this check is for online applications only.
We are not affiliated with HM Passport Office or the UK government.
