Your Indian passport photo, ready to upload
Applying from abroad? Since December 2025 you upload your own ICAO photo. Take it at home: we check it, crop it to exactly 630 × 810 pixels and keep it under 250 KB.

Our lines are estimates. Drag them onto the chin and the top of the head if they are off; the crop follows.

Before you take it
- Someone else takes it, about 1.5 m away, phone at your eye level.
- Plain white wall, no shadows. Face a window for soft, even light.
- Glasses off. Eyes open, mouth closed, natural expression, no hair across the eyes.
- Keep your head and the top of your shoulders in the photo, with space above your head. We crop it close for you.
What we check and do
- One face, no glasses, head straight and facing the camera, eyes open, mouth closed, plain light background, even lighting.
- Head size: chin to top of head between 80% and 85% of the photo’s height (our reading of “the face takes up 80-85% of the photograph”).
- We crop and resize to 630 × 810 pixels, JPEG under 250 KB.
- We never edit your face or background. The rules forbid it, and edited photos get refused.
What we can't check
- Rimless glasses, glare, small shadows (we only catch a strong shadow on one side), hair covering the eyes: look at the photo yourself.
- Whether the photo is less than 6 months old, and whether it looks like you today.
Our measurements are estimates. Only the Indian mission or its passport service (VFS, BLS) decides whether a photo is accepted: we help you catch problems, we don't guarantee acceptance.
Can I take it at home?
Yes. Since 1 December 2025, applicants abroad must upload an ICAO-compliant photo themselves. The Embassy of India in Bern says it “can be taken at any professional studios” and, if you can’t go to one, you may make it compliant yourself: plain white background, cropped close to the face.
The same guidance says photos should be “unaltered by computer software”. That’s why we only crop and resize, and never touch your face or the background. Some service centres ask for slightly different file sizes: check your mission’s page before you upload.
We are not affiliated with the Government of India, VFS Global or BLS International.
